Nerja has a long history, history proved by the famous cave paintings found in the Nerja Caves that were discovered in 1959 and recent studies show that these paintings are the among the oldest of its kind in the world. Nerja was dominated by the Muslims culture who called it Narixa, which means <abundance of water>.
The climate is mild throughout the year, growing subtropical fruits, avocado, mango, custard apple. Nerja has about 23000 inhabitants that multiplies during the summer months.
Many expatriates are living in Nerja from Europe, highlighting the originated from the United Kingdon, Ireland, Scandinavia and Germany, the British are among the most numerous and many are homeowners in Nerja. Nerja has about 70 hotels and numerous beaches, including the most famous called BurrianaBeach. Nerja retains its Andalusian village character.
In Nerja we highlight the caves of Nerja and the Balcon de Europa with its spectacular views. The largest beach in Nerja is Burriana beach. Nerja fair takes place from 9 to 12 October and the famous festival of classical music in the caves is during the month of July.
